The Founding of Exsilium
Years prior the warriors and countrymen of Exsilium were proud servants of the Emperor of Rome. They were the protectors of the Emperor, protectors of the Roman ideals. Strong, virtuous, honorable, they fought for what Rome once stood for. Many years and Emperors had passed, but even the most impregnable fortress without constant vigil over a period will weaken. So too did the virtues of the once mighty Rome rot with the passage of time. The Emperors, Senators and Plebs once charged with maintaining the Roman virtues grew too comfortable in their station in life and allowed Rome to decay.
A few virtuous men, though comfortable in wealth and power, grew sick of the corruption and lack of virtues. These men began to wonder if the status quo should be protected and maintained. Engaged in secrecy, a handful of true Romans and trusted sons of Rome's conquered lands conspired on how to make Rome virtuous and strong again. Change was a must, the Emperor, the Senators and Plebs had to be shown by force that they had failed in their duties to uphold the ideals of Rome. The group, mostly comprised of Praetorians who were closest to the Emperor, knew that they, as the best warriors and most respected of Rome's citizens should be the ones to lead the rebellion. They plotted and prepared to overthrow the Emperor. The clerics within the ranks of the Praetorians consulted the oracles and read from the auguries. They returned with the news that the gods were pleased and held the Praetorians in high favor. The gods had blessed them with a victory, although it had not been foretold when this victory would occur.
At dawn on the day that the revolt would begin the Praetorians, much to their dismay, learned that they had lost the surprise. They had been betrayed by many of the men they called friend during the planning stages of the uprising, The traitors for fear that they would lose their power and wealth if the uprising failed, sided with the Emperor to protect their decadent lives. They sold their souls for material wealth and power. The Praetorians were now to face a prepared Emperor and his loyalists. The day was long and the rebels fought with bravery, honor and extreme vigilance. Many hours of tumultuous blood letting filled the streets of the capital. Losing the initiative hurt the praetorians battle plans immensely; at best they would be facing a stalemate. Knowing they didn't have the forces to complete their tasks, the rebel forces chose to retreat to the surrounding suburbs of the capital to regroup. Skirmishing continued for days, but the fearless and powerful Praetorians held off the Emperors troops ever-resisting defeat. In the end the rebel leaders agreed that eventually they would fall. The order to retreat was then given. The revolt had failed
While leaving Rome's territory, the Praetorians gathered more and more disenfranchised people to their cause. They promised them a better future, a proud future. Unable to build a force in such a corrupt place so close to the heart of evil, the Praetorian forces moves on to seek like minded individuals and build a force to overthrow the corrupt government. They would live in exile while building a well drilled and extremely efficient armed force that would one-day aid in their triumphant return to Rome. On their journey for a home the need for gold to equip their growing armies, and care for their faithful following of citizenry grew. The leaders of this band of exiles chose to use their skills and arms to fight for the cause of others. Maintaining their virtues, showing their newly acquired forces that bravery and honor are not opposed to gaining wealth and power. Legion Exsilium trekked across the eastern plains and forests in search of a place to call home, all the while providing arms for gold.
As they roamed, a triumvirate government was established with fair elections and soon after they found the land where they would build their new home. With the praise of the gods and protection of an army, they laid the foundation of their city, placing the first brick of many to follow on the road to building a glorious country. Setting up their senate to build their laws of virtues, building their forges to construct the arms and armor to protect their ideals, and formed a church to forge beliefs in the hearts and minds of the people. Exsilium has found a home and is ready to build a glorious epic.
